    CAS President Lu Yongxiang met with Dr. T. Galbaatar, Deputy President of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences (MAS), on Dec. 12 in Beijing.

    China and Mongolia are friendly neighbors and CAS and MAS are good partners in S&T coopeation, said Lu. Mongolia is rich in natural resources. The geological and biological research on the Mongolian side of the Mongolian Plateau could be complementary to that on the Chinese side, he noted.

    Lu called for achieving common development by having eyes on the future and adopting effective measures. He suggested that the two academies invite institutions from other countries to promote their joint cooperative research. He pledged that CAS would provide support to MAS to the best of its ability.

    The two leaders signed several cooperative pacts including a memorandum on scientific cooperation between two academies, an agreement on cooperation between the CAS Institute of Botany (IOB) and the MAS Institute of Botany, and a memorandum on IOB’s donation of specimen cabinets to its MAS counterpart.

    According to the agreements, CAS institutes including Institute of Geology and Geophysics, IOB, and Institute of Atmospheric Phpysics will conduct cooperative projects with MAS institutes on grassland management and recovery, trans-border nature reserves of the Altay Mountains, orogenic belts, dust storm control and prevention.

    President Lu received a certificate for the MAS foreign membership from Dr. T. Galbaatar. He was elected a foreign member of MAS at a general assembly of MAS held on Feb. 2002.
